SURFACE PREPARATION

Follow standard practices and procedures for properly preparing surfaces for the application of traditional waterbased latex paint.  All surfaces to be painted must be entirely free of dust, dirt, oil, grease, and other contaminants.

Completely remove all loose, flaking, or chalking paint from the surfaces.  Provide adequate ventilation.    Properly prime the clean, dry surface with a Compatible Primers. Always test the product in a small, inconspicuous area before beginning a project. We recommend preparing a sample board prior to beginning a project to check color and technique.  The paint should be mixed thoroughly before using.  Modern Masters Satin Metallic paints can be brushed, rolled, or spray applied (See specific equipment requirements under Spraying) onto any paintable, properly primed, interior surface, such as walls, ceilings, columns, trim, doors, furniture, and paintable wallcoverings.    Do not apply in temperatures below 58°F/14°C or above 85°F/29°C.

APPLICATION

NOTE: Lower temperatures and/or higher humidity will lengthen the dry and cure times. Higher temperatures and/or lower humidity will speed up the dry and cure times.

BRUSHING: Use a high-quality brush recommended for water-based latex paints.

ROLLING: To roll add up to 16 fl. oz./473 ml Metallic Paint Extender to one gallon/3.78 L of Metallic Paint. This extends the “wet-edge” time necessary to avoid lapping. For best results use the Metallic Paint Roller to apply Satin Metallic paints to large surfaces, such as walls. Use a 4-inch ‘sausage roller’ (such as a Whizz™ roller) with 1/2" nap to cut in corners, ceilings, and baseboards.  This will produce a slight stipple finish.  Work in approximately 4-foot wide sections, keeping a wet edge, and finishing the surface by back-rolling in one direction, ceiling to floor.  This procedure will minimize lap marks, properly orient the metallic paint particles, and ensure a uniform surface.

SPRAYING: Use a NIOSH approved respirator when spraying. Provide adequate ventilation.  To spray Satin Metallic Paint Collection paints, thin with up to 16 fluid ounces of water to one gallon of Satin Metallic Paint Collection paints.  Thin carefully, as over thinning of the paint will result in loss of hide and a reduction of the desired appearance.  Use an HVLP gun or a conventional cup gun with the fluid and air supply from a pressure pot and compressor.  Air pressure at the HVLP spray gun needs to be approximately 45 psi, with greater pressures at the tank, approximately 60 psi.

NOTE: Do not use turbine-type “air-compressors” to power the HVLP spray gun; do not use other types of spray guns (e.g. airless spray guns).

TAPING: Use high quality, low-tack tape when taping over surfaces that have been previously painted with Satin Metallic Paint. Therefore consider cutting along the tape edge with a razor blade to avoid delaminating the fresh paint from the substrate.

TINTING: All Satin Metallic Colors can be intermixed to create custom colors.

DRY TIMES: Recoat time is approximately ½ hour.  Dry-totouch time is approximately an hour.  (Drying times were recorded at 70°F and 50%RH.)

COVERAGE: There are three levels of coverage/hide: Opaque, Semi-Opaque and Sheer. Opaque colors have excellent hide; two coats are recommended for best results. Semi-Opaque colors have good hide; three coats are recommended for best results. Sheer colors are translucent overcoats that give luster to traditional paints, other Metallic Paint colors or faux finishes. One gallon will cover approximately 208 to 320 square feet.

PROTECTIVE CLEAR COATING: Exterior applications require the use of Metallic Paint Collection MasterClear® UV Protective Clear Topcoat. This topcoat can also be used for interior applications requiring increased scuff and abrasion resistance and improved washability for demanding environments.

STORAGE: Close tightly all containers when not in use.  Store in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze.  If Satin Metallic Paints become frozen, allow the paint to completely thaw and come to room temperature before use.  Stir thoroughly before use.
